DR FLEMP: Journey through Development and Future Plans

DR FLEMP: Journey through Development and Future Plans

Greetings to all! We are excited to share the progress and highlights of the DR FLEMP application development. Since the inception of this project, we have made significant strides in creating a groundbreaking language learning tool. Together with our esteemed partners, we have embarked on an incredible journey that has brought us closer to achieving our goals.

The first phase of development involved meticulous planning and analysis. We worked closely with our partners to define the requirements of the application, ensuring its alignment with the principles of effective language education. We emphasized the importance of integrating language learning with practical medical scenarios, equipping nursing and caretaking students, as well as professionals, with the necessary linguistic skills for their roles.

Building upon this foundation, we created a robust framework application that serves as the backbone of DR FLEMP. This framework provided us with a solid structure to design and implement various features and scenarios. We took a significant step forward by developing the minimum viable product (MVP), which showcased the core functionalities of the application.

Within the MVP, we dedicated our efforts to crafting immersive scenarios that truly engage the users. One scenario focused on simulating nurse shift transfers, allowing users to experience real-life situations and practice language skills in a dynamic healthcare environment. Additionally, we integrated a scenario centered around interacting with a patient with diabetes, enabling users to apply their language knowledge in a medical context.

To further enhance the user experience, we leveraged innovative technologies, including artificial intelligence. By incorporating ChatGPT, an advanced AI model, we empowered our game characters to communicate with users in a conversational manner. This cutting-edge feature enables a more interactive and immersive learning experience, making language acquisition both enjoyable and effective.

Looking ahead, we have ambitious plans for the next phase of development. We aim to create two immersive scenarios that harness the power of both augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies. These scenarios will offer users an unprecedented level of immersion, enabling them to explore medical environments and practice language skills in a simulated setting.

As we progress, user feedback will be invaluable in shaping the final product. Therefore, we plan to conduct extensive pilot testing to gather insights and make necessary refinements. Our ultimate goal is to deliver a polished and user-centric application that meets the needs of language learners in the healthcare sector.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our partners, collaborators, and all those involved in the DR FLEMP project. Together, we are pushing the boundaries of foreign language education and digital transformation in the EU. We are excited about the impact that the DR FLEMP application will have on the language learning journey of nursing and caretaking students, as well as qualified professionals.

DR FLEMP – 3rd Transnational Project Meeting

DR FLEMP – 3rd Transnational Project Meeting

The project meeting of the DR FLEMP project took place last week (on October 20-21) at the Language Centre – Cyprus University of Technology in Limassol (Language Centre – Cyprus University of Technology ). The meeting served as further step for gaining a shape of the upcoming VR application development aimed to enhance foreign language education for medical professionals using virtual reality tools.

All partners presented the first prototypes that resulted from the Design Thinking workshops held during the summer months. CUT Nursing School students tested these first prototype models of the future simulation and gave their feedback on usability and user experience.

Further intensive discussions on the planned learning scenarios that are to become the produces lessons of the project required a lot of time and attention from all the parties involved: researchers, language teachers and teaching instructors and, of course, the developers. By the next meeting the VR simulation protypes should already be developed and go into piloting phase.

Design Thinking Workshops for MR Application Development

Design Thinking Workshops for MR Application Development

As part of the DR FLEMP project’s mission to support digital transformation in Foreign Language Education (FLE) within the EU, several design thinking workshops were conducted by project partners. These workshops aimed to develop an effective and engaging MR application for language learning in medical contexts.

Lithuania Workshop (June 2022) The workshop held in UTENOS KOLEGIJA focused on creating a storyboard and prototype for an MR application. Participants included language instructors, medical instructors, and professionals. Using the framework developed by Design Thinking Explorations, the workshop followed an established methodology that adopted the principles of design thinking adapted from Google Design Sprint. Throughout the workshop, participants collaborated to design an immersive VR application for medical language learning.

Sweden Workshop (June 2022) In UMEA, Sweden, another design thinking workshop was organized, bringing together researchers, language instructors, and designers. The objective remained the same: to develop a storyboard and prototype for an effective MR application. By leveraging the Design Thinking Explorations framework, participants explored creative solutions and tested their ideas. The workshop followed a methodology inspired by Google Design Sprint, ensuring a systematic and user-centered approach.

Cyprus Workshop (September 2022) The design thinking workshop in Cyprus University of Technology gathered language instructors, facilitators, and a medical instructor. The participants worked collaboratively to design a storyboard and prototype for an MR application tailored to medical language learning. Following the Design Thinking Explorations framework, the workshop incorporated oral activities conducted in Greek and written activities in English. This multilingual approach enhanced the inclusivity and engagement of the participants.

Germany Workshop (July 2022) The workshop in Germany brought together representatives from SPRACHiNVEST GmbH, language instructors, German learners, and healthcare institution representatives. The goal was to develop a compelling storyboard and prototype for an MR application focusing on medical language learning. Like the previous workshops, it followed the Design Thinking Explorations framework, allowing for a structured and collaborative design process.

These design thinking workshops have played a crucial role in the development of the DR FLEMP project. By harnessing the principles of design thinking and incorporating the expertise of language instructors, medical professionals, and researchers, the workshops have paved the way for the creation of an innovative MR application. The prototypes developed during these workshops will undergo user testing and evaluation, ensuring that the final product meets the needs and expectations of language learners in the medical field.
